Common Exception Words Years 3-4In addition to the spelling rules and patterns that are taught in school, all children are expected to be able to spell the words on this list by the end of Year 4. In Year 3, we expect children to be able to spell many of them already.
We will be looking at the word lists for Y3-Y4 and this word list will be provided for home, so children can work at their desired level.
These words do not follow the usual phonic rules, and so are therefore referred to as 'common exception words'.
We will practise these words in class, but it may be helpful to keep looking at them with your child throughout the year, as children will be tested half-termly to see what they can read and spell.
I have also included the words in your child's reading record for Y1 and Y2 if your child has not quite mastered these words from last year (to both read and spell). If your child has a significant amount to learn, then I will send out the relevant list each half-term after they have been re-assessed. These will be checked at the end of every half-term and recorded in your childs' reading record, so you can practise these as an intervention at your leisure.
